"We did not ask for this mission, but we will fulfill it." -- President George W. Bush

Joe Biden

 Hey folks,
It’s me, old Joe Biden. As you may know, I took a lot of flak recently for saying we should draw down troop levels in Afghanistan—Ariana Huffington even said I should resign, but that crazy witch doesn’t even speak English. Anyway, I just wanted to explain why I said what I did.

The newly resurgent Rush Limbaugh is probably the worst thing to happen to the Republican Party and the conservative movement. Yes, even worse than Barack Obama and the recent electoral successes of the Democratic Party. Limbaugh is entering into politically dangerous waters by calling for President Obama to fail. He is acting like the crazy uncle that everyone keeps in the backroom at family parties, lest he put his foot in mouth and say something uncouth and embarrassing. But Limbaugh has done this already many times over in the past.

In the past few weeks, Rush Limbaugh has proven conclusively that he is the head of the Republican Party and speaks for all conservatives.  Indeed, the connection between all Republicans and Rush is so strong that when he eats buffalo wings every Republican in the country gets heartburn.  What most people still don’t realize is that Rush Limbaugh is actually in charge of the entire country.  He has constructed an alternate power structure by infiltrating talk-radio-obsessed conservative zombies into key government agencies.  Over the past two months, he has been re

Obama's decision to close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp was probably the right one. While it may be convenient to keep the detainees incarcerated in a sort of legal limbo, it would not be in the long-term interests of the U.S.

The debate over what to do with the Guantanamo detainees has devolved into a whiny cry-fest for both sides of the partisan debate.  Some whimper about the supposed rights of these non-citizens, while others belly-ache about security concerns and want to waste good money caring for them in Guantanamo.  I, for one, am disappointed that no one seems to have considered all of the useful things your country could do with these prisoners.  Having conquered an empire much more vast than your puny conquests in the Middle East, I know a thing or two about how to make profitable use of

In the United States, we do well to remember that our elected officials are not perfect. Democracy demands both tough decisions and popularity for success in office: two expectations not easily reconciled in modern day politics. We remember also that history can reverse any contemporary judgment upon a statesman. However, just as history can rebuff, it can also confirm, and sadly it seems that President Bush is not bound to traverse the paths of the most fondly remembered presidents.

While criticism of George W. Bush has grown redundant in today's climate of Bush-bashing, most of his accomplishments remain overlooked. Defining success by public approval ratings, of course, yields a poor result. However, Harry Truman, who left office with approval ratings almost as low as those of Bush, now is credited with achieving victory in World War II, the genius execution of the Marshall Plan, and pioneering containment that secured our eventual victory in the Cold War. Perhaps Bush will find a similar vindication after an objective review of his achievements.

When trying to describe the infinite moral and political failure of the Bush Presidency, it is hard to accept that George W. Bush is a human being at all.  It is tempting to appeal to Greek mythology and suggest that President Bush is the twisted love child of Narcissus and a mentally impaired box turtle.  However, if we can make the mental leap and assume that George Bush is a human being, then it is inevitable that we judge him as the worst human being who ever lived.

The regulation debate has started again in the United States. The recent financial crisis has caused scholars to return to the question of whether or not, and how much, the government should meddle in the financial markets. While defenders of significant government intervention operate under flawed assumptions according to neoclassical economic theory, so too do defenders of complete financial deregulation. Minimal, but well-designed, regulation is required in order to guarantee a properly-functioning market.

There is a saying, attributed to Rita Mae Brown, that “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” The financial services industry in the United States is regulated and overseen by a multitude of government agencies, organizations, and commissions.

Imagine if you will, the primitive steppes of Mongolia circa 1200 AD. Imagine Merchants and traders robbing and killing each other, men abducting the women of their slain foes, and the strong crushing the weak under their jackbooted domination. Now imagine a level of anarchy a million times worse than that and you will begin to appreciate the vicious, unfettered credit markets on the eve of the current financial crisis.

There is one trait that all vice-presidential candidates since at least Andrew Johnson have shared: they were picked to get the presidential hopeful to the magic number of Electoral College votes.  The strategy of picking the most qualified person, while admirable, is clearly not required.

John McCain once remarked that his opponent, Barack Obama, would “rather lose a war than lose an election.” Obama, he claimed, was willing to knowingly support counterproductive policies in order to increase his chances of winning the Presidency. Given the Republican vice presidential nomination of Alaskan governor Sarah Palin, it appears that the McCain campaign has now taken the same approach.

I know not by what magic The Georgetown Federalist has summoned me to the present to declaim on Sarah Palin, but I must render an important judgment regarding her. By the time I became the tyrant of Rome, I had conquered Gaul and my internal enemies, dispatching thousands of them to Hades. What has this Palin done?
