Earlier this week, my R.A. distributed “Hate Free Hoyas” signs for us to demonstrate our opposition to hate crimes. As a supporter of gay rights and tolerance, most of my floor mates and I taped the signs to our doors. As a campus and a community, it is only right for us to oppose hate and support respect for each others as individuals.

On January 24th, when General Petraeus came to speak at Georgetown University, it came as a bit of a surprise to me.  Through my work on national security and Afghanistan, I knew that the General was making his rounds in Washington, but I didn’t know that he would be coming to the Hilltop.  It seemed like the type of event that the University would want to publicize to its alumni.  If it weren’t for the fact that one of the interns wor

It is not very often that one has the opportunity of obtaining front row seats to musical entertainment performed by Georgetown's Jesuit community.  Last Saturday evening, however, students from around the campus gathered in Wolfington Hall for the event known as "Jamming with Jesuits" as part of Georgetown's Jesuit Heritage Week.  Fathers Rogers, S.J., Walsh, S.J., Lobiando, S.J., and Madden, S.J., each performed their talents, including singing and playing the guitar, accordion, and piano for a roomful of students and staff.  The student a cappella group, Georgeto

With the Inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama fast approaching, institutions across D.C. are bracing for the final days leading up to next Tuesday's swearing-in. With attendance estimated at up to 4 million people, a number besting George W. Bush's 2005 inaugural crowd by more than ten times, metro-area colleges, businesses, and government agencies are beginning to implement their own preparations for the inaugural ceremonies, and Georgetown University is no exception.

Since the remodeling of the Leo J. O’Donovan Dining Hall during the summer of 2008, several new and welcome additions are in store for Dining Services at Georgetown University and the campus community. Coming in 2009, alongside the construction of Georgetown University’s Starbucks and Cosi restaurants in the Leavey Center, is a new Grab ‘n’ Go location, set to open around the corner from the Chevy Chase Bank.

An old war has restarted in Gaza, and both sides feel the pain of it.  The current Israeli ground incursion into the Palestinian territory is designed to eliminate the military capability of Hamas by destroying the weapons caches and the tunnels used to restock those caches.  But in focusing solely on the temporary roots of the conflict-the availability of rockets and other armaments-the Israeli government ignores the larger problem: Anti-Israeli ideology within the territories that is the cause of the violence.

Luke Lagera and Lauren Calvello are Georgetown juniors who host a radio show on campus, "The Hilltop Report – An Inconvenient Radio Show."

Georgetown Federalist: What is The Hilltop Report?
Hilltop Report: At the beginning of last year, Lauren Calvello enlisted the help of her friend Matthew Sharp to help put together The Hilltop Report. The show was designed to feature their discourse on politics, culture, and media.

Barack Obama, reflecting politicians proclivity for bold pronouncements while disregarding the risks of being hyperbolic (not to mention unrealistic), declared, “I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that…this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Many Hoyas look forward to that exciting moment when they will finally be upperclassmen and have the chance to secure a lease on a townhouse with their friends. Once they have moved in, they imagine that they will live together in a fun, relaxing environment. If only that were always the case: instead, they often face opposition from surrounding residents.

Okay, maybe not.

On November 4th, many Georgetown students will vote for the first time in a US presidential election; I turned 18 on October 3rd, so this will be my first as well. Still not registered? Here’s what to do:

Editor’s note: Every day, the Department of Facilities is inundated with calls from helpless Georgetown students who need help unclogging their toilets or fixing a leaky pipe. No more. Brendan “The Tool Man” Lane tells you how to man up and fix your own damn problems.

Andrew Jackson once famously remarked of a Supreme Court decision he found particularly onerous, “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it.” Over 170 years later, the Court continues to have difficulty enforcing compliance with the mandates of its decisions. The Court’s landmark ruling this June in District of Columbia v. Heller, declaring key aspects of DC’s gun ban unconstitutional, has gone largely unheeded, as the DC Council’s remedial gun law has done little to change some of the most restrictive elements of the previous ban. The Court has been getting some help from Congress in recent weeks, however, as a bill requiring further compliance with Heller passed the House easily on September 17. More congressional and legal action is needed if the full implications of Heller are to be actualized.

“Given Georgetown’s Jesuit and Catholic tradition, its grounding in the liberal arts, and its commitment to intercultural education, what are the skills, knowledge and wisdom every Georgetown graduate should have?” This was the question posed by Provost J. Donald Freeze, S.J. to Georgetown’s Core Curriculum Review Committee in the spring of 1986.
